Labour, SNP and Conservatives miss School Streets opportunity

by jamescalder on 10 September, 2020

During a meeting of Fife Council, the SNP and Labour watered down a motion by Fife Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Councillor James Calder to bring in a report for a schools streets scheme in Fife, while the Conservatives voted against the motion’s ideas completely.

School streets schemes are schemes to bring in traffic restrictions in certain streets around schools.

Councillor Calder has said,

I brought forward the motion to help look into encouraging road safety around schools, as well as reducing pollution and taking consideration of local residents.

We have severe traffic problems outside most of our schools and the SNP/Labour Fife Council coalition has consistently failed to deal with this. Something needs to change.

My motion would have allowed us to investigate these types of schemes, as well as measures to reduce pollution at schools and bring a report back later.

The Conservatives didn’t seem to care and voted completely against this, whereas Labour and the SNP just watered it down.

While they have agreed with my proposal to bring a report to look into School Streets, I can’t believe they rejected my proposals to look into pollution issues. I was happy to compromise but apparently this is not a priority for them.
