Worries as progress slowing in reducing attainment gap in Fife

At the Fife Council Education and Children’s Services Subcommittee, Fife Liberal Democrats Education Spokesperson Councillor James Calder has raised concerns about the slowing down of the attainment gap between lower income pupils and higher income pupils in Fife.

The report has shown it has slowed for literacy and numeracy for P1, P4 and P7 pupils, numeracy at SCQF level 5 and achievement of 3,4 and 5 awards at National 5.

Councillor Calder has said,

It is worrying to see the slowing of the reduction of the attainment gap in Fife in many areas. We need to ensure that all pupils have the same opportunities and unfortunately this gap in opportunity still remains locally.

After I raised this at the Education and Children’s Services Subcommittee, some of this was explained due to pupils who do not engage with learning or have attendance issues.

Fife Council must redouble it’s efforts with these pupils and work to ensure that they all get the same chances in life.
