Worrying Levels of Teacher Vacancies

by jamescalder on 3 October, 2018

Fife Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Councillor James Calder has expressed concerns over teacher vacancy numbers as schools approach the October break. Currently there are the following teacher vacancies in Fife:
Primary – 4 x Headteacher posts
                 4 x Depute Headteacher posts
                 21 Teacher posts
Secondary – 33 Teacher posts
Cllr. Calder has said,
It is deeply worrying the high numbers of teacher vacancies as we quickly approach the October break. Currently there are 62 vacancies in total including 4 head teachers.
The SNP Scottish Government must do more to encourage more people into teaching. Our teachers are doing a tremendous job but unfortunately poor pay rises and a lack of support has led to a collapse in morale, as shown by a recent EIS survey.
More must be done to support the teaching profession both by the Government and locally in Fife Council. It is a disruption to our young people’s learning when there are so many vacancies and I call on action to be taken.
