Worrying numbers of schools without Smoke/Heat Detection Fire Alarms

by jamescalder on 1 May, 2018

A total of 30 schools in Fife have ageing fire alarm systems which do not have either smoke or heat detection. Fife Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Councillor James Calder has raised concerns about this issue.

Cllr. Calder has said,

It is deeply worrying in light of the recent fire which burnt down much of Cairneyhill Primary School that in Fife 30 of our schools are fitted with antiquated fire alarm systems which do not have smoke or heat detection.

While Fife Council may argue this is in line with the Scottish Government Practical Fire Safety Guidance, I would argue that our children’s safety must be paramount and the best possible fire alarm systems should be in place as a matter of urgency.

I am therefore calling Fife Council to accelerate their programme of fire alarm placements, which currently could see a further 3 years until all are upgraded, to ensure our schools are as safe as possible. Perhaps the Scottish Government should also look at their own guidance to ensure that the most stringent levels of safety are in place for schools.
