Dunfermline Area Committee Report 17-04-18

by jamescalder on 19 April, 2018

Earlier this week the Dunfermline Area Committee met with an agenda that I considered to be of great importance. A number of substantive items were discussed at the meeting.

The report that came about as a result of my motion to push for all Single Carriageways that are currently 40mph to be reduced to a maximum of 30 mph was discussed at the Committee. To be frank, I was highly disappointed by the report, which suggested that none of the roads in question should be reduced.  Having read it I could understand the rational for some of the roads, but I brought up as an example Lapwing Drive in Dunfermline South. On one stretch of this road children need to make a terrifying crossing to get to their school bus and there is no crossing for them. Despite my protestations, unfortunately some of the other Councillors felt the need to defend the status quo. In the end I inserted an amendment into the report recommendations requesting these roads be consulted upon with elected members on a case by case basis, and with some of the other Councillors supporting my position I hope to keep this on the agenda.

Another issue that was discussed that is particularly pertinent currently is the major road and pavement works to be undertaken this year. There were a number of schemes that I was particularly pleased about, including a footway repair scheme on Walls Place, road resurfacing on Morrison Drive and Masterton Road and a Puffin Crossing on Aberdour Road by Tesco Metro. I did express surprise and disappointment that previously discussed footway repairs in Pitcorthie were not on the agenda, as it is well known some of these are crumbing away. In a sense there were positives and negatives in the report and I agreed to approve it.

Various other items were discussed – including agreement by Councillors to approve local community planning budgets. There were reports on alcohol in Dunfermline, the progress of the Year of Young People locally, from the Fire Service and on Beautiful Fife. We also heard from the Fife Cultural Trust, and while Councillors agreed there was some great work in the new museum, there was disappointment expressed that the library closes early on Wednesday afternoons and this was urged to be changed.
